-Aether Law, PLLC -
Aether Law's primary focus is attorney consulting on digital forensics in Northern Michigan. As a licensed and insuranced professional investigator and attorney, I work directly with other attorneys and their clients. Aether Law's abilities include identifying sources of digital artifacts, extracting those artifacts, examining the data, and testifying as a witness in civil actions. Since electronic devices are nearly ubiquitous, a competent understanding of digital forensics can help improve your position in civil ligitation and other civil law arenas.
DIGITAL ARTIFACTS
Digital Artifacts are "clues" that are left behind when when a device that stores data is used. Artifacts can tell a story of where a person was located, what they were doing, and who the participants were.
In civil cases, it may be difficult to ascertain the "where", "what", and "who". Digital Artifacts can be the key to determining the truth
Digital Forensics - the application of computer science and investigative procedures involving the examination of digital evidence - following proper search authority, chain of custody, validation with mathematics, use of validated tools, repeatability, reporting, and possibly expert testimony. https://csrc.nist.gov/glossary/term/digital_forensics
identify
Digital Artifacts are found in many "containers". The two most common location are mobile devices and computers. However, they can also be found in a variety of locations like cars, personal electronic assistants, UAVs, and gaming devices.
extract
In order to review digital artifacts in a forensically sound manner, the data must be usually be extracted. Cellebrite is an application that I use to extract data from mobile devices. Other software is available depending on the needs of the client.
examine
Once the forensic extraction is complete, the digital artifacts can be examined. This includes the "low-hanging fruit" like key word searches, chats, photos, etc. Additional hard-to-find artifacts can be used to craft a timeline of the where, what, and who.
tristan CHAMBERLAIN
Born in Texas, lived out West, and graduated law school in Michigan, I arrived in the Traverse City area married to a local. In 2016, I was hired as an intern for prosecuting an individual involved in multiple life offenses. One of my first tasks was to examine 18 devices with over 100 GB of information. I was able to assist in multiple convictions in two counties with the information I uncovered. I have been involved with PCs for about 30 years starting with DOS Shell. I am combining my experience as a lawyer, with computers, and digital forensics to offer clients increased access to digital evidence.

TESTIMONIALS
I contacted Aether Law to perform extractions on two phones belonging to opposing parties in a civil lawsuit. It was a somewhat complicated case, and the opposing parties were, to put it mildly, rather difficult. Aether Law did the extractions quickly and effectively and added great value to the case. Perhaps just as importantly, Aether Law was detailed, timely, and very accessible which was critical to the outcome of the case given the timelines that existed. I recommend Aether Law’s services to anyone that needs an extraction done well, done quickly, and at a reasonable price.
- Robert Whims, Traverse City Attorney
I retained Aether Law to provide expert testimony in connection with a motion to determine the validity of a purported trust document in a complex divorce matter. Tristan conducted a review of pdf documents to determine if there were any digital artifacts or other observations regarding the form of the purported trust that would aid in the Court’s determination regarding the document’s veracity. Tristan was qualified as an expert in the field of digital forensics and provided clear, concise testimony regarding his observations, which played a critical role the Court’s findings in our favor. Tristan is extremely knowledgeable, professional and easy to work with. I would highly recommend Aether Law to anyone in need of a consultation and/or expert testimony relating to digital artifacts or information.
